The price of gold has reached Tk 55,287 per bhori as the local jewellers raised the price by Tk 1451 on Friday following the recent price hike of the precious metal in the international market, traders said.
"The price of gold has been increased by Tk 1451 a 'bhori' (11.66 grams) in the local market," Bangladesh Jewllers Samity President Dilip Roy told the FE Friday.
The newly fixed price is as follows: 22-carat gold Tk 55,287, 21-carat Tk 52,837, 18-carat Tk 46,540 and traditional gold Tk 35,800 a bhori, according to the traders.
The prices of gold in the local market on August 6 were- 22-carat Tk 52,080, 21-carat Tk 49,747 and 18-carat Tk 44,009 and traditional gold Tk 34,400 a 'bhori'.
The prices on August 9 were 22-carat Tk 53,830, 21-carat Tk 51,438 and 18-carat Tk 45,490 and traditional gold Tk 35,104 a 'bhori'.
The price of gold increased on three occasions within 14 days from August 6 to August 19 due to the continuous price hike in the international market.
The price of the precious metal hit a record high above $1816 an ounce Thursday as demand for the safe haven investment rose on resurgent worries about a possible new recession in the global economy, according to AFP on August 18.
The price of gold fluctuated between $ 1823 and $ 1878 an ounce in the international market till Friday evening, according to international market data available on websites.
Mr Roy also the owner of Grameen Jewllers said, "Usually we re-fix the price of gold three or four days after new hike in the international market. But in the context of the volatile world market price of gold is changing rapidly."
Mr Roy said, "The price of gold might rise further next week if the present trend of price hike continues. If the gold price varies more than $ 50 a day then we have to face trouble in fixing the price in the local market."
"The days are not far away when the price of gold could reach Tk 70,000 to Tk 75,000 a bhori in the local market, he added.
